CRAZY MARY'S BIO

In most cases, CRAZY MARY is some insane woman at the center of a piece of deranged folklore. In this case, CRAZY MARY is a band dedicated to finding new tribal, raw, psychedelic grooves. Formed in 1998, CRAZY MARY has become a cult favorite on the New York City music scene.

2007 once again brings a new recording and lineup changes to the band. Many tracks on the current release, NUCLEAR LIPSTICK (Humsting 2007), are recordings of spontaneous jams with Charles Kibel, Nick Raisz, The Wizard and Walter Steding that occurred several times throughout the course of the last year and a half. We then went into Hardluck Recording Studios with longtime engineer Michael Ciaiti (Coyote Recording Studios) to record some additional material and finish the other stuff.

Walter Steding, with whom Crazy Mary has collaborated since 2002, has become a FULLTIME member. Introduced to the band by CHRIS STEIN, Walter, one of the pioneers of the NO-WAVE movement, was a fixture at CBGB's in the 70s and 80s. He was the leader of the TV Party Orchestra, the house band of GLENN O’BRIEN’S legendary live, call-in TV show. Walter has recorded with Robert Fripp and Jim Carroll, among others, appeared in DOWNTOWN 81, and played on the soundtrack of the John Waters movie POLYESTER; he is perhaps even more famous for being ANDY WARHOL'S painting assistant.

Walter first performed with CRAZY MARY on KNUCKLEHEAD, but has since been performing live with the band in New York City and surrounds. The EDO BERTOGLIO movie, FACE ADDICT (2005), captured footage of Walter playing with CRAZY MARY at Meow Mix in December of 2002.

With the departures of Sophia Jackson in 2003, and, subsequently, Kristin Smith in 2006, Em Z has become the new front for Crazy Mary. The band was blown away when she laid down the vocals for NUCLEAR LIPSTICK at the studio. Born in Adelaide, Australia, Em Z brings a powerful voice and gritty stage presence to the band.

Now, I’m supposed to tell you how we’ve made six records, THIRSTY FOR COOL (2004), KNUCKLEHEAD (2002), BURNING INTO THE SPIRIT WORLD (2001), ASTRONAUT DUBS (2000), SHE COMES IN WAVES (1999) and PASSION PIT (1998); that they all were played extensively on college radio stations, many of which put our records on their top 30 lists, blah, blah blah; and, that CRAZY MARY's music has been played on Idiot's Delight, hosted by legendary DJ Vin Scelsa, and on Spin College Radio's nationally syndicated show, yada, yada, yada. I’m also supposed to tell you how wonderful we are because we played CMJ 2005, Midpoint Music Festival 2005, HOWL FESTIVAL 2004, EST FEST 2003, and NEMO 99 (New England Music Organization); and, that favorable reviews of the band have been published in The New Yorker, The Boston Globe, The Village Voice, and The Daily News, as well as in numerous music publications, and so-on and so-forth. But really, for us, the only important thing is playing together and creating some fun and interesting music.
